The annual Osaka Policeman's Ball was a fabulous affair--men in black ties and women dressed in both traditional kimonos and elegant Western-style dresses whirled around the dance floor, or stood to the side discussing closed cases and making polite conversation with acquaintances they hadn't seen in a year.

Shin'ichi Kudo sat at a table, his wife Ran sitting next to him, her head on his shoulder. They'd been dancing a few moments before, and were taking a short break. The two of them had been invited by Heiji and Kazuha. Ran had been thrilled to get a chance to see her friend once again, and Shin'ichi was looking forward to seeing his own adversary-turned-friend himself.

"Tired already, Neesan?"

Both of them looked up, Ran smiling and sitting upright. "There you are! We've been looking for you both all night!" She stood and gave Kazuha a tight hug, which was returned.

"Don't tell me you caught a case?" Shin'ichi teased, standing to shake Heiji's hand. "I'm off tonight, I'm not saving you."

"Oh ha ha."

Shin'ichi smiled as Ran let go of the other girl. "Kazuha-chan, you look lovely tonight," he said as he gave her a hug as well. Her long hair was pulled back in a bun and she was dressed in a long deep-blue evening gown that made her eyes pop. "Although I must confess, I expected you in a kimono."

"She's too curvy for one of those." Heiji put his arm around his fiancee, grinning like the idiot he was proving himself to be. "Ka'za looks like a real woman tonight, doncha think?"

Shin'ichi and Ran winced, waiting for the blow.

Instead, Kazuha smiled and kissed his cheek. "Thank you, Heiji."

Shin'ichi sighed inwardly. Only from Heiji would that be considered a compliment.
