totally4ryo for the fly-by-midnight beta. Happy Thanksgiving to everybody, not just us Americans!
"What's wrong, you four a'scared of a little old alien?" Jack called out across the Hub, taking his greatcoat off and hanging it up on the coat rack.
He was met with silence.
"... Guys?" he ventured cautiously, slowly stepping up to look around. "Helloooo...?" he drawled out.
"Tosh? Hime*?" Toshiko's computer screens were running lines of figures, and Jack realized that she was working on the Rift Projection program.
"Owen, are you hiding in a crypt and waiting to jump out at me?" Owen's autopsy bay was scrubbed clean, the chemical sting of the sanitizer still permeating the air.
"PC Cooper, paging PC Cooper?" Gwen's desk was still littered with papers concerning their latest case, but they were neatly piled and ready for filing.
Which brought him to... "Ian-TO!"
"You bellowed?" Ianto's voice drifted down from the second floor walkway.
Jack looked up at him and spread his hands wide. "Is everyone else gone for the day? In the middle of a Thursday afternoon? I mean, I know it's been slow lately, but still..."
Ianto gave him a little smile. "Well, as the saying goes: While the cat is away, the mice will play."
Jack put his hands on his hips.
"We're having a briefing, sir," Ianto said. "We were just waiting on you to come back from your call," he finished before disappearing into the meeting room.
Jack took the stairs two at a time, whistling a little bit as he walked down the short hall. He froze when the door slid open.
The team had a complete spread set on the table; a nice-sized turkey full of stuffing with a gravy boat next to it, sweet potatoes and cranberry dressing and what looked like some green bean casserole and a loaf of what had to be made from scratch bread. There was even a bottle of fine champagne and five gorgeous place settings, gleaming silver mirroring fine china plates and topped off with crystal flutes.
"Happy Thanksgiving!" the girls cheered, giving Jack a huge grin. Owen lifted his glass and nodded a little.
"... Is it really Thanksgiving?" Jack asked, looking over at Ianto.
"Fourth Thursday of November," Ianto said, giving a smile.
Jack put his hands in his pockets. "Guys, this is sweet, but you do remember that I'm not really American, right?"
"So?" Owen asked. "Free food, free booze, sounds like a plan to me."
Gwen glared at Owen. "It's a good theory, American or no," she told Jack. "Taking some time out from all this stuff we do to remember the good parts of life."
"I'm guessing this was your idea?" Jack asked, giving a sly grin.
"Actually, it was Ianto's," the Welshwoman said, smiling at Ianto.
Jack turned to Ianto as well, who gave him a smile. "There's pie and coffee for after too," he said, holding out a flute of the sparkling wine.
The Captain took it. "I'd hate for the Rift to go off in the middle of our celebration," he said, letting himself get led to the empty seat at the head of the table.
"The Rift Projector's saying it'll be quiet until mid-morning tomorrow," Toshiko said. She gave a sneaky, adorable grin. "Although if you wanted to do work, I'm sure that there's plenty of paperwork for you to do..."
"Besides, I understand that cold leftovers are also a Thanksgiving tradition," Ianto deadpanned, taking his own seat.
"If that means I'm fed for a couple of extra days, so be it," Owen said with a grin.
"Fine, just don't complain when you're eating yet another turkey sandwich," Tosh said, shaking her finger at him.
Owen threatened her with the gravy ladle, rich brown liquid dripping down onto the table. She shrank away, laughing along with the rest of the table.
Jack smiled a little as he watched the team bicker and laugh. Ianto looked over at him. "Is this okay? We wanted to surprise you," he murmured softly.
"No, it's great," Jack reassured the younger man, smiling at him. "I just remembered what I'm grateful for."
