Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] lemiserabelle for the prompt! Set very shortly after Ianto and Jack join the Doctor. And this is the argument I used to defend why I didn't want a pair of Converses.

Also, feel free to leave story ideas/prompts in your comments or over here at this LJ post.

1/?: And So It Begins
2/?: Time Travel Messes With Your Senses
3/?: It's Just Sex, Sex, Sex With You People

The TARDIS' wardrobe was a work of art: A beautiful spiral staircase that breathed and trembled underneath their bare feet, with miles and miles of beautiful piece after beautiful piece. Steampunk next to Renaissance next to something definitely alien -- he didn't have that many limbs -- next to a huge hoop skirt.

Ianto found himself wishing he could bring his father along. He'd love to see the finely tailored suits that took up a whole floor.

Jack was raiding the wardrobe for something appropriate for Meiji Era Japan. He'd tried to talk Ianto into a yukata with a leer and a murmur about easy access, but had been satisfied when Ianto agreed to change into a slightly more dated suit.

"Ooh, hey, found the Doctor's stash of Converses!" Jack's voice, muffled by clothing, caught the Welshman's attention from his admiring the TARDIS (he could feel her live, feel the life force thrumming underneath his hand, like feeling blood moving underneath a pulse point) to watch Jack. He came out with two trainers in his hands, one black and one bright red. "He's got 'em in about fifteen different sizes too, and that's just at a casual glance." He turned the red one back and forth, admiring it. "Want to see if he'll hit the roof if we wear a pair?" he teased.

"I'll pass, thank you," Ianto said curtly, "but by all means, don't stop on my account."

"I rarely do," Jack leered, toeing off his boots.

Ianto tried not to laugh at the look of pure mischief that crossed Jack's face, diverting his attention to the rack of suits. The fabric didn't even smell dusty, although he was willing to bet that the Doctor had been by here in a few decades.

"Why don't you want a pair?"

Ianto couldn't suppress the grin at the question. "I'm not fond of tempting fate."

"Pardon?"

The Welshman looked over at his lover, watching the toes of the black Converses move slightly as Jack wiggled his toes inside the shoes, testing them out. "Two people we know regularly wear trainers, sir. One is the Doctor. The other is Gwen." He turned his attention back to the clothing. "If you'll excuse me for saying so, they happen to have some of the worst luck."

Jack's posture changed as he regarded the younger man. "And you think it's because of their sneakers?"

"I'm not willing to take the chance."

Jack kicked the shoes off before throwing them back into the closet. "See any shoes over there?"

Ianto smiled and handed him a pair of leather lace-ups.

Oh, this is classic! I could totally see them rummaging through the wardrobe like that. Especially with Jack and his impish nature. Thank you for sharing!

[identity profile] gracie-musica.livejournal.com 2008-06-01 01:18 pm (UTC)(link)
*laughs* Well the Doctor lets the others go through the wardrobe, but I have the image of Jack doing it like a little kid; pulling this and that out, throwing it on the floor or just tossing it back into the closet if he decides against it (and now with Ianto rolling his eyes behind him!)

[identity profile] kirri1.livejournal.com 2008-06-01 09:56 am (UTC)(link)
I'm loving this but, I still don't understand why you have Ianto calling jack "sir" it is so out of place.
I have to admit, in a less well written piece I would simply stop reading as it shows such a blatant departure from series two canon, and I am not happy with that!!!
But I do like this, anyway.

[identity profile] gracie-musica.livejournal.com 2008-06-01 01:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Ianto's teasing Jack, thus the sir.

[identity profile] charlie-jae.livejournal.com 2008-06-01 12:01 pm (UTC)(link)
15 different sizes... LMAO... yeah i can see that.

[identity profile] gracie-musica.livejournal.com 2008-06-01 01:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, the TARDIS has all different size clothing, it follows that it would have a ton of different shoe sizes!

Mint! I love it!

Thank you! I'm glad that you liked it.

Well, you just talked me out of the sneakers. (But they make purple! *has purple shoe lust*) I must admit, Ianto makes a compelling argument. I love the way he teases Jack - and thinks of his father. *giggles* TARDIS wardrobe! Yay!

[identity profile] katestamps.livejournal.com 2008-06-01 02:05 pm (UTC)(link)
If you have not read "The Dresser" and the sequel "Naked" by Sam Storyteller go and do so, because you'll love them. Really.

[identity profile] gracie-musica.livejournal.com 2008-06-01 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I adore everything [livejournal.com profile] sam_storyteller does. Owns my soul.

I think you're okay with purple ones, since I've never seen either of them in purple trainers.

I sort of put a little of myself into Ianto at that part. My mother is a home ec major, and was planning on being a fashion merchandiser before she met my dad. She sewed a lot when I was little too, before she went and got her teaching certificate, so whenever I see really pretty clothing, I think about how my mother would like to see it.

hee.
you're probably right, it's always the shoes ;)

[identity profile] gracie-musica.livejournal.com 2008-06-01 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes. We've got to blame it on something.

Here you go! Though I'm sure if you ask nicely....or just threaten, he'll make an LJ community for it.

Love, worship, adore you!

I know, I know...you people only love me b/c I do stuff for you! No one loves me for me! *dramatic moment in which she throws her head back with one hand clutched over her heart and one palm up on her forehead*

Lol...okay, I think I'm over it now! These things tend to happen when you're in the midst of unrequited love triangle. Even though I'm not an TW or DW fan, as a writer, I LOVE your icon right now! I want to use that the next time someone calls me while I'm writing...I hope it's my mom!

Re: WriDaNoJu MySpace link

[identity profile] midassa-in-gold.livejournal.com 2008-06-01 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Correction, it can't be a triangle if it doesn't link back to you and you're not entirely sure there's a third person..I guess it's an unrequited love angle or just a line? Hmm...I'll have to make up a good word for that!

Re: WriDaNoJu MySpace link

[identity profile] gracie-musica.livejournal.com 2008-06-01 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh no! :-(

D'you want me to call you so you can use that line on me?

Re: WriDaNoJu MySpace link

[identity profile] midassa-in-gold.livejournal.com 2008-06-01 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I'll forget about it once I've finished my ironing and can get back to my writing, so don't shed a tear for me.

I don't think the line will work quite as well on you since you know it. I have to wait for some unsuspecting victim to try that on.

Okay. *hugs*

Call me if you want to procrastinate together.

(love that icon, btw, it's SO YOU)

Oh Ianto, how I adore you!! Loved it!

You wrote a fic about the sneakers! Yay!

It does beg the question, though: how would the Doctor react if someone took/borrowed something that belongs to him? He seems to give his companions free reign in the TARDIS (though I bet she hides a lot of things), but what about his "trademarks," like Four's scarf, Ten's sneakers, the name John Smith, ect...

What's that fluffy little thing over there? *inspects* Oh my, it's a plot bunny. I don't even write fanfic, yet there it is. *wishes her own stories came so easily*

Yes, I wrote fiction about sneakers. And honestly, it was something I'd had my mind on for a bit. *grins*

I never thought about the luck idea!

[identity profile] gracie-musica.livejournal.com 2008-06-06 06:33 pm (UTC)(link)
*laughs* I can get really superstitious, so it was just me being silly.

[identity profile] angelicmousegrl.livejournal.com 2009-04-19 03:01 am (UTC)(link)
Awww this is funny and cute. Totally in character for The Doctor as well. Gwen wears trainers as well? I've never noticed her shoes ever...hmmm. Oh well... This was kind of fun for me since I have big ole Converse love <3 I'm jealouse of the doctor's collection. XD Good stuff!

[identity profile] gracie-musica.livejournal.com 2009-04-19 06:13 am (UTC)(link)
*laughs* Yeah, Gwen wears trainers. In Countrycide she steps in a pool of blood, and they show 'em. I think she's in orange trainers in that one.

I'm glad that you liked it!

[identity profile] evester.livejournal.com 2009-05-19 10:49 am (UTC)(link)
lol

I don't think it's their shoes. I wear my converse every day. Haven't noticed any changes in luck. Mine are pink ones. :D

[identity profile] gracie-musica.livejournal.com 2009-05-19 06:40 pm (UTC)(link)
It was my defense to a friend of mine who wanted me to buy some trainers. I got them anyway; wore them today, actually.

[identity profile] evester.livejournal.com 2009-05-19 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
And did you have bad luck?

[identity profile] gracie-musica.livejournal.com 2009-05-20 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
Actually... I was stuck at the DMV today for about 3 and a half hours.

[identity profile] evester.livejournal.com 2009-05-20 05:59 am (UTC)(link)
Well, that's not really bad luck. Just the DMV. Always takes forever.
