"So, am I right in thinking that you and he..."
"We... dabble."
"Yeah?"
"Yeah."
"So what's his "dabbling" like?"
"Innovative."
"Really!"
"Bordering on the avant-garde."
"Wow."
"Oh yeah."
-- Martha Jones and Ianto Jones, Reset

"Ianto, for God's sake, watch where you're going!"

Ianto Jones, resident Mage of Torchwood House and so-called hero of The War (no real name to it yet, just a great big THE), looked up from the book in his lap just in time to narrowly avoid getting beheaded by a low-hanging branch. He ducked low over his saddle and the text, rubbing his beloved Myfanwy's flank. "What, don't want me reading either sweetheart?"

Another horse, a sweetly stubborn mare named Janet, swooped in front of Myfanwy, making her stop short. Ianto grabbed the pommel with one hand as they lurched to a halt. His lover, Jack Harkness, hoisted himself down out of his saddle and put his hands on his hips.

Ianto had to fight the urge to laugh at him. Oh, that was a face he knew well, the as your teacher I am highly disappointed in you face. "That's the third time you've almost been knocked off your mount, Jones."

"You've warned me each time," Ianto pointed out, closing the book. He kept a few fingers slipped between the pages to mark his place. "And it's all her fault."

Jack caught Myfanwy's reins, patting her nose affectionately. "She's just mad that you're not paying her enough attention," the Time Lord shot back. Myfanwy snorted and tossed her head in agreement, and they shared a laugh.

"Come here," Jack said, holding out a hand. Ianto dug in his pocket for a scrap of ribbon he was using as a bookmark and stuck it between the pages. He handed over the book before dismounting, laughing a little when Jack smacked him on the arse with the hardback.

"What are you doing?" he asked, taking the text back and watching his lover unbuckle Myfanwy's saddle and his pack bags.

"You're going to hurt yourself," Jack said, hoisting his things up onto Janet's back. He pulled out a length of rope from one bag and secured the saddle. "Myfanwy's being a little brat and she's gonna knock you off her back."

The Time Lord hoisted himself up onto the horse's bare back, giving Ianto a cocky grin before offering a hand up. Ianto clambered onto Myfanwy's back, rubbing her neck encouragingly. Jack snagged Janet's reins, handing them over to Ianto, who already had his book open again. Ianto looped the lead around one wrist without looking up.

Jack chuckled as he reached around Ianto's waist for Myfanwy's lead. He had to scoot closer, his front flush up against Ianto's back. Ianto could feel Jack's heartbeat, warm and strong against the curve of his spine. "What are you so intent on?"

"Book your father gave me," Ianto said distractedly. The words were starting to lose their appeal.

The older man leaned in and kissed his ear. "I see that," he said low in his ear. "What's it about?"

"Spells," he murmured, leaning back against the Time Lord.

"Ooh, what a surprise." A rich chuckle washed over him. "Going to say more than five words at a time?" Jack teased, kissing his ear again.

Ianto smiled a little when Jack's lips lingered a little longer than necessary. "I don't know," the young Mage teased back. "Should I?"

Jack growled and nipped his ear.

"It's the immortality spell," Ianto said, tipping his head back just enough to entice Jack to kiss down his neck.

The older man kissed right behind his ear, sucking softly. Ianto couldn't fight back the low moan that bubbled up from his throat. "Don't push yourself," Jack cautioned. "It hasn't been that long since..."

"Since I died?" Ianto completed the thought, turning to smile at Jack over his shoulder. "I know. And it's not like I'm going to be able to do it any time soon."

Ianto had been back to square one in his magical studies -- less than, actually, since now no one had any amazing expectations from the wonder child Pleaser Mage. He was still suffering from burnout too, getting far too tired for his liking after far too little work.

It was infuriatingly similar to how things had been when they'd discovered his primary. Most of his friends -- notably Gwen, but the Doctor also topped the list -- had thrown Ianto into theory study. The least change was, as before, in the Healing halls and with Toshiko, bumped back down to dutiful assistant. Rhys and John had backed off considerably as well, focusing on controlled experiments. Donna was the only one who was really pushing him in any sort of capacity. He'd come out of the short practices exhausted, but feeling satisfied that he'd completed something.

"You'll be up to speed in no time," Jack reassured him. "I know it. I know you."

Ianto's smile widened and he leaned over to kiss Jack's cheek before turning his attention back to his book. Not ten seconds later, he felt Jack's lips against the juncture of his neck. "Are you still sure you want to do this?" the Time Lord asked softly.

"I said I would," Ianto replied, turning the page.

"During an emotionally unsettling time," Jack pointed out. "You're allowed to say no now that you're thinking clearly."

Ianto closed the book with a dull thunk, a small cloud of ancient dust escaping from their pages. He gave a quick tug to Myfanwy's leads, and she became more interested in the grass along the side of the road than in continuing on her way.

He twisted around and grinned at Jack, grabbing the front of his shirt. Jack let out a yelp of surprise, laughing a little when Ianto pressed their mouths together. Jack's hands drifted down to his waist, pulling the younger man back tighter against him, groaning softly when Ianto slid a wet, talented tongue into his mouth.

Ianto pulled back after a long moment with a wet pop, grinning at him.

Jack groaned. "Don't play with fire, Jones."

Ianto laughed, running his fingers through Jack's hair. "I know I have an out, Jack," he said with a smile. "You've told me every day for the past two months."

Jack cupped his cheek with one hand. "I know it's a hard decision."

"You make it an easy one," Ianto said with a grin.

"Right," Jack said, patting his thigh with his free hand. "That's it. Off the horse."

Ianto laughed. "We'll be late. Your parents will worry," he said even as he hopped down from his mount, Janet's lead and the book of spells forgotten.

"They know we're big boys," Jack teased back, hopping down. He wrapped his arms around Ianto's waist and kissed him again. Ianto laughed even as Jack pushed him up against Myfanwy, the mare standing fast against the two riders.

"Riding is going to fucking hurt one of us," Ianto pointed out, tipping his head back as Jack kissed down his neck.

"Ways around that," Jack replied. "Or a quick Heal."

"No oil," Ianto protested again, his fingers sliding down to untie the front of Jack's trousers.

"Being a killjoy on purpose?" Jack asked, nipping hard enough to raise a red mark.

"Someone has to be the voice of reason," Ianto countered, slipping a hand between the gap in Jack's pants, palming the hard bulge.

"Voice, yes," Jack groaned, bucking into his hand. "In action, no." He gave up with Ianto's ties, pushing the pants down off his waist. Jack's hands gripped his arse and hauled him forward, and Ianto groaned as his hard shaft brushed against Jack's.

Jack's mouth found his as one hand snaked around to grasp both of their cocks, squeezing pleasantly. Ianto groaned again, reaching down and tangling his hand in with Jack's awkwardly.

It was a little clumsy going at first but they eventually found a rhythm, both of them thrusting up into their joined hands. They were both panting hard, foreheads pressed together as their hands sped up. The feel of Jack's hand, of Jack's cock pressed up against his own made Ianto shiver, his eyes rolling back in his head.

Jack gasped out his name -- such a gorgeous sound, faint and soft and almost like a quiet prayer -- and stiffened against him. Ianto watched his face, eyes unfocused and mouth hanging open as warm, wet heat coated their hands.

Watching Jack find his completion pushed Ianto over the edge into his own. The edge of his vision blurred and Jack leaned in and kissed him, so softly and sweetly that it took away what little breath he had left.

When he came back to himself, Jack was wiping them clean with a handkerchief. They righted their clothing, distracting each other with teasing kisses while they tried not to look like they'd just had sex in the middle of the road.

"Any chance we can stop somewhere and have a quick dip?" Ianto asked as Jack grabbed Janet's lead, the two of them clambering back up on Myfanwy.

"There's a river between here and Capitol," Jack confirmed. "But you know if we stop, we're going to end up doing that again."

Ianto groaned softly. "Your father is going to kill us."

Jack grinned and nipped his ear. "Good thing it won't take, then."

-----

"And where the bloody hell have you two been?"

Ianto and Jack froze in the hallway, the servant girl carrying their things looking back at them with big eyes. Ianto felt like a kid again, getting caught by his Mam trying to sneak out with some mates after everyone had gone to bed.

The Doctor and Queen Rose were dressed for bed and supposedly sleeping in separate -- but adjacent -- bedrooms. The head of Torchwood House was in a pair of striped sleep pants, his arms crossed across his bare chest, while the Queen had a dressing gown wrapped tight around her body to keep the chill away.

"You were expected about three hours ago," the Time Lord continued.

Jack opened his mouth to say something, but Ianto cut him off. He could tell Jack was going to kiss and tell. And while Ianto wasn't ashamed of his relationship with Jack, there was a limit. Especially when it came to talking to the parents of one's lover.

"Janet threw a shoe," Ianto lied smoothly. "We had to stop at a blacksmith before she injured herself."

The Doctor raised an eyebrow that clearly said I don't believe you.

Ianto's eyes cut over to Rose, and she gave him a knowing wink. He managed to fight down a blush.

"Right," the Doctor drawled, so much like Jack. "A blacksmith."

The Queen canted her head to one side. Ianto got the message: Give him what for.

"Actually, you've caught us out, sir," Ianto admitted in his perfect deadpan. "We had sex in the middle of the road." The Doctor's eyebrows shot up to his hairline as Ianto continued. "Then we had to stop and at least try to get the come out of our pants at this river, which led to more sex. And then we sort of fell asleep for about an hour or so."

Rose's mouth was hanging agape, and Jack was staring at him in amazement, but Ianto was busy taking in the shocked expression on the Doctor's face.

Yes, there was a limit. But sometimes the shock value was so worth giving more information than necessary.
