Yeah. Idris is a very smart man, he took to Alchemy like a pro -- he just didn't have the ability or the chance to learn growing up.
My grandfather had a similar type-thing happen to him when he was a kid -- all his older siblings ran off and joined WWII when he was little, so he had to quit school in the 3rd grade and work on the farm. He could take apart a tractor and put it back together like nothing, but he could barely read the manual it came with.
