Hmmm... I think I understand what you mean.

I am new to fan fiction writing myself (READ: I suck ^_^;;) so when I get a comment on something I've written -- I feel really encouraged... and it also gives me a chance to make a new friend.

I try to pass that encouragement on. If I read a fic written by someone who is new to fan fiction writing, I leave a comment -- even if just to offer my support and encouragement and thank them for their efforts.

If I enjoy an author's work a lot (like yours) --I feel compelled to let that author know that I appreciate their hard work and admire their talent. Afterall, I imagine that even the best authors can feel discouraged from time to time.

That being said, there have been many times when I have written a review (or in some cases, *many* reviews) and never so much as an acknowledgement from the author... It's discouraging. I understand that everyone has a life and we are all busy, but I think a simple acknowledgement like "Thanks for commenting" would be polite if the reader takes the time to write a thoughtful review.
