This is what I have down so far for the fic I'm writing for Kou's birthday. I wrote most of it yesterday, but my muse ran away with my typo demon, I think. Ideas, anyone?

And a big thanks to Kou for the icon. Hehe.

---

WARNING: Chat inspired.

"This is bad."

Kou and Jim Hawking and Gene Starwind were in Gene's office, discussing business. For once, all three were dead serious, Kou with a yellow legal pad and a pen, Jim with a stack full of files. Behind his desk, Gene rubbed his eyes. "Define 'bad', Jim."

"At this rate, we won't make half the monthly rent on the building, much less docking fees," the blonde replied, blue eyes sober.

"Mom and Dad said they'll give us half rent on loan," Kou chimed in, making a little notch on her pad.

"No, no." Tanned fingers ran though short red hair. "We'll never hear the end of it from them."

"Taylor and the Musicas have offered loans as well," the bottled-redhead continued. "All three will cover rent and docking, plus some change."

"And that'll be our Plan B," Gene butted in, "your parents, Taylor and Grace. What are our other options?"

The Hawking siblings met each other's eyes before diving in further.

Jim started. "I talked to the bank... That was a no-go."

Gene sighed. "Of course it was."

"We can always beg from Fred," Kou added.

"And, of course, there's the bounty on your head."

Gene raised an eyebrow. Jim's tone told him that the blonde was only half-kidding.

"After that, it's sell the Outlaw Star--" Kou continued, making more notches in the margins.

"Over my dead, rotting body."

"--Or sell our bodies," she finished, capping her pen.

The two men looked at their adopted sister with round eyes. Kou, in turn, blinked.

"What? Organs make a killing on the Black Market."

Two pairs of blue eyes rolled towards the ceiling.

"And, of course, crime," Gene concluded. He rubbed his face furiously for a few seconds, hoping the increased blood flow in his head would give him an idea. It didn't. "Mel and I are headed to Blue Haven and Heifong for two weeks, I'll take Aisha and Suzuka along. Maybe we'll find some bounties or something."

"I have school and private tutoring," Kou piped up.

"And hopefully we'll get some odd jobs in," Jim said, nodding.

"Okay, you two. We have a month to do this."

And that's when Kou got her idea.
---
They had the money.

Hell, they had more than enough. Four high bounties on Heifong had seen to that. However, he was waiting to tell the others the good news in person.

Big mistake.

"Kou?"

"Yes Gene?"

'Innocent smile,' Gene noted mentally. 'Something's up.' "Explain something to me."

"What?"

"Why is there someone sleeping in my bed?"

"Ahahaha... Funny story about that."

"It'd better be fucking hysterical," Gene threatened in a growl, his hands on either side of Kou's shoulders. The two were in the hallway, and Gene had the younger woman pinned to the wall.

"Well, when I started thinking about how to pay for rent, I recalled how you hated being in people's debt."

"Yeah..."

"So I called Fred."

"You WHAT?!"

"It gets better! I got him to pay for six months docking fees, rent, anything we'll need and waive past debts for one... small inconvenience."

Gene got dangerously silent. Kou noticed that his forearms were twitching. "Kou."

"Y-yes?"

"You have until ten."

She was gone before 'one'. Gene followed her retreating figure to lock eyes with Jim, who was eating an apple. "Why didn't you stop her?"

Jim blinked. "You said she had ten."

"Stop her from calling FRED, you dumb ass."

Shrug. "I didn't know she had done it 'til she did it." The blonde bit into the apple. "And when I did find out, she pulled IT."

'IT' translated into 'rank'. As the second oldest of the three co-owners, Kou had more power than Jim. And with Gene gone, she could run amok, as it were.

"How long?"

"One more week. You really missed the fireworks, too. It took us the better part of three days to explain that the skirts in the closet were Mel's, not yours."

"Fucking hell," Gene swore, punching the wall in frustration. Jim flinched as his partner's fist went straight though the drywall. "Well, if Fred's paying, I'm making him pay big."

"I'm sure he won't mind," Jim replied, taking another bite from the apple. "After all, it's not every day you get to paw though your crush's underwear."
---
Fred was dressed in Gene's clothing at dinner.

Gene and Fred engaged in overly polite conversation (for Gene's part) across the table.

Melfina looked worriedly between the two, waiting for something to break down.

And the others were trying their hardest not to laugh at the visible tic in a vein in Gene's forehead.

After dinner, when the dishes were cleared and Fred went back to do God-knows-what in Gene's room--"Pro'lly install hidden cameras," Kou whispered, making Jim almost do a spit take--Gene sprawled across the table. "I don't think my heart can take much more of this."

Mel crossed her arms. "I think you're being very childish about this whole thing, Gene."

Everyone stopped what they were doing and stared at the dark-haired woman. Her voice had taken a tone none of them had ever heard from her before.

"Have you even stopped to consider Fred's feelings?"

"What about mine?" Gene protested.

"Oh, so you've never had women you didn't love falling all over you? Just because he's a guy, that makes it different?"

"Yes! Yes it does! Very different! And, I will add, those women never went through my clothing."

" 'Cause they were out before they had the chance," Jim muttered before taking a sip of tea. Kou snorted, trying to muffle her laughter and became Melfina's next target.

"And you, Kou Hawking, you should be ashamed of yourself. You're exploiting that poor man's feelings for your personal gain."

"Oh, I know," the bottle redhead replied, smirking a little. "But the humor I find in this situation far outweighs the shame I feel from it."

"Koushiro!" Melfina chastised.

"Besides, he broke the number one rule for courting a crush, same sex or different," Kou continued matter-of-factly.

"Which is?"

"If they're not interested, back off. There's nothing wrong with having hope their feelings will change, but after a few years it should just turn into a personal fantasy."

“I don’t need that mental image,” Gene moaned, covering his ears with his hands.

Also, I'm starting the Chinese New Year chapter.
