"The white of the dusting of snow
lingers in the shadows, on the fallen leaves,
the cooler spots in the yard,
in the lee of the shrubs, the crooks of the branches
in subtle and still ways, remaining
a little longer, cooling the world,
providing fringe and accent
before the sameness of winter
when shades of gray in the snow
will mark its edges, dimensions
now it remains trim around the edges
in little and small places, in the calm
away from sun and activity
hiding a while before fading
slowly, slowly, away
before the winter coming"

-- Raymond A. Foss
Winter Coming

Ianto stopped when he saw Jack glaring out the kitchen window. The Captain was frowning at the little patches of snow still hiding underneath the hedge around Ianto's garden.

"We had flurries last night I see," Ianto said, handing Jack his coffee. When Jack made a distracted noise of agreement, the younger Welshman tried again with, "Looks like enough snow to have a little bit of a fight with."

Jack shivered. "Don't like the cold," he finally said. "Don't like to be cold."

"Explains the coat." Ianto pushed away from the counter when the toast popped up, spreading a liberal amount of jam on Jack's like the older man enjoyed. "Supposed to snow some more tonight. At least the Rift is projected to be quiet."

Jack's frown deepened.

Ianto moved to wrap his arms around Jack's waist, kissing his neck softly. He was trying to dispel the melancholy that was clinging to Jack like the cold clinging to the windowpane.

"Come on," he said softly. "Let's take a warm shower," he suggested.

Jack melted just a little, and Ianto could feel his smile. "Together? Isn't that against your rules, something about making us late for work?"

"I think Gwen can manage for one day," he said, tugging at Jack.

The Captain laughed and the cold fled, leaving bright, warm sun in its wake.

By the time they made it out to Ianto's car, the white spots on the grass were long gone.
