O Winter! frozen pulse and heart of fire,
What loss is theirs who from thy kingdom turn
Dismayed, and think thy snow a sculptured urn
Of death! Far sooner in midsummer tire
The streams than under ice. June could not hire
Her roses to forego the strength they learn
In sleeping on thy breast. No fires can burn
The bridges thou dost lay where men desire
In vain to build.
O Heart, when Love's sun goes
To northward, and the sounds of singing cease,
Keep warm by inner fires, and rest in peace.
Sleep on content, as sleeps the patient rose.
Walk boldly on the white untrodden snows,
The winter is the winter's own release.

--Helen Hunt Jackson
A Calendar of Sonnets: January

Jack had been around long enough to know that winters came in all shapes and sizes.

There were warm to hot winters full of sun and sand and alcohol and half-clad people.

There were bone-shattering freezing winters with teeth-clattering, mind-numbing frost and so many layers of clothes you could barely walk.

There were loud winters full of people yammering away and crowded houses and quiet winters with everything muffled by snow and the crackle of a fire. Long winters, short winters, wet winters and dry winters.

Jack hated them all. He’d always hated winters, but Cardiff winters were the absolute worst. They were cold and wet and the definition of the word horrid. They made his bones ache, the cold hurt his teeth, and he just wanted to curl up underneath an electric blanket and hibernate until spring.

Ianto, on the other hand, seemed to thrive in the cold weather. He’d come in, full of energy and flush from the cold, stomping his feet to get circulation flowing, grinning like a kid. And sometimes, Jack would catch him before he’d warmed up completely, still-chilled fingers trailing along bare skin…

Maybe winter wasn’t all that bad. He could learn to like them.

Very nice.

I agree with Jack winters suck specially when you have close to two feet of snow on the ground.

But, they would nice If I could have an Ianto. Who I could curl up with and he could shovel the paths and driveways.

Yes. We need people like Ianto to spend winters with.

I don't like winter, but I'm with Jack and agree that Ianto would definitely make them bearable.

Yay, three fics from you today! *grins*

*laughs* I had a backlog on footnotes, and I'm playing major catch-up yesterday. And today. Beware the f-list flood.

I almost forgot what winter could be like until the last week -- and here I am without the winter clothes I used to have in NY and Japan.
*was freezing the last couple of days*
Anyway... um, yeah... wish I had an Ianto to warm me up. But since I'm not used to the cold anymore, then I'd like a Jack too.
Great job! :)

I like this flooding of your fics. Keeping me warm and comfortable after shoveling 4+ inches of new snow.

I can see the appeal...though Jack might have to fight his way through as many layers as Ianto usually does. Even the laying field, as it were.

Please tell me 'laying field' was a pun. Because that's too freakin' funny, Mommy Kate. *giggles*

I'm pretty sure I'd adore winter if I could warm up with an Ianto...

(and yes, as you may have noticed I'm having a 'omgneedtocatchuponmyflist' reading binge)

(I did notice, and I'm not complaining)

And I think Ianto could improve any and all seasonal issues.
