Every time I post something that is not fic or otherwise fandom related, I always feel like saying, "I never do this!"
But I do more often than I admit.
So here it goes.
Also (and I always say this too) but if you don't have a hint as to how I feel about equal rights issues, you're reading the wrong journal.
I saw this on
ashgrove's Twitter last night, and thought it was important to share -- and then I realized that my LJ friends should share the love. It's an old video, so I'm sure quite a few of you have seen this before. It's George Takei on Jimmy Kimmel in 2007.
Now. Did Hardaway have the right to say what he did? Damn straight he did. No matter how much it pisses me off, he didn't say they should all go die. He didn't say people should take up arms against teh eval gays. He just said he hated them, which is sad but it's also life.
But I have the right to say, Tim, baby, methinks you're protesting too much, if you get what I mean, nudge nudge wink wink. And I have the right to say that I'm disappointed that a man who's a role model and hero to many people can't bother to at least, you know, even pretend to be tolerant.
Of course, the appropriate reaction to the video is "OMG ILU GEORGE." The man pulls it off just absolutely perfectly with that sort of "I know this will really piss you off!" careless attitude, and kudos to the writer/writers who came up with it. Honestly, that's the only way to really get those types of people truly upset; make light of what they have to say, (or even better, just ignore it) and be completely, utterly... happy.
That's the best revenge of all.

I adore George Takei. ♥ I had the amazing pleasure of meeting him and actually hanging out with him for a little while when he spoke at an Asian Leadership Conference in Boston that was organized in part by my best friend. He struck me as being a smart, deep, down-to-earth guy. He talked about how whenever he is in a new city, he always likes to go for an early morning walk because the best way to feel the pulse of a city is through the soles of your feet.
I told him that I was a fan of his work. His response was so gracious. He thanked me (How rare a response is THAT? O_O!) and said how much he appreciated the support of his fans. We ended up chatting for about 1/2 hour until he had to go up to stage to talk.

Date: 2009-08-14 11:38 am (UTC)I have gay friends and do not take kindly to anthing derrogatory said about gay people.
I hope Tim and all his friends see that vid. and learn some tollerance.

Date: 2009-08-17 02:29 am (UTC)I've gotten to the point where I just give up. So many people who talk like that are either in denial or they just want someone to yell back because they need attention. They're not worth it.
