topiary -- the craft of scultpting hedges and trees gets its name from the Latin word topia, meaning "ornamental gardening." The head gardener of an ornamental garden was called the topiarius. The original root word (pardon the pun) was the Greek term topos, meaning place.
blackthorn winter -- cold weather, when the blackthorn is in blossom.
-- Albert Hyamson's Dictonary of English Phrases, 1922
Glastobury Holy Thorn Pilgrimage
A particular variety of thorn--an introduced species of hawthorn that once grew on Wearyall Hill, near Glastonbury, Somerset--was believed to have blossomed annually on this date from the time of Christ. A pilgrimage was organized to celebrate St. Joseph of Arimathea's thrusting of his walking staff into the ground, where it miraculously sprouted and took root. He had come to England with the Holy Grail, a chalice in which he had caught a few drops of the blood Jesus shed during the Crucifixion. The relic helped Joseph found a congregatioini in Glastonbury and it was sought tireless by King Authur, whose castle was nearby. But the Puritans considered this legendary tree to be just another object of idolatry and, in the mid-1600s, felled it. Cuttings alleged to be from the tree continued to grow, however, nd can be seen at Glastonbury Abbey and nearby St. John's Church.

He fiddled with his tie as he stood on the other side of the bamboo and rice paper doors, waiting for his turn. The door opened, revealing the prime minister. The two officials pointedly avoided looking at one another, the judge entered the room and the door slid shut behind him. A sandy-haired schoolboy glared at him as he approached the princess.
I've been expecting you, Your Honor...
