Day 08 - A show everyone should watch -- Futurama
Just because it's canceled doesn't mean you shouldn't watch it anyway.
It is the ultimate geek show. It's for geeks, by geeks. Because only a geek could so fully grasp fandom the way the creators/writers of that show do.
Fry's sort-of the cliche of a geek: Living in his parent's basement, watching tv instead of working. He's an ultimate Star Trek fan, as evidenced by the Star Trek episode in the final season. He's sort of the Companion into the crazy world of the future because he is the uneducated Everyman through who you see a good portion of the world. He's also sort of a Gary Stu, if you will, since he also happens to be The Most Important Person In The Universe quite a few times. His crush on Leela is pathetic and makes me want to give him a hug.
Leela, in turn, is also a geek as well, if you spin it the right way: Educated, intelligent, more than a bit kick ass, but socially awkward and looked down on because she's not fully 'human'. She's a bit like a lot of the girl geeks that I have the privilege of knowing -- an unknown creature to be admired and slightly feared.
Amy amuses me, mostly with her swinging between shallow rich girl and semi-intelligent, still-figuring-herself-out young woman. But mostly shallow girl. Who's insanely jealous of Leela because she's got her act together.
Bender. Oh, you crazy robot. His bromantical (robotmantical?) love for Fry is hilarious and amusing and heartwarming all at the same time.
Hermes' toe-the-line attitude is perfectly juxtaposed with his creative swears and Rastafarian attitude.
Zoidberg... Let's move along, shall we? (actually, I think Zoidberg steals the show quite a few times)
And Professor Farnsworth is such an OLD MAN that it's insane. The best part? I see my grandmother in him. It's almost scary.
The plotlines and story arcs are simultaneously outrageous, socially aware, and completely relevant all at the same time. I honestly believe that it was really too intelligent to last for very long on television. The fact that it lasted as long as it did is a miracle.
And it's so damn quotable.
