Ianto Jones looked up from his work as the door to the Tourist Information booth opened. He smiled at the figure in the doorway. "Bore da, Gwen," he greeted her in Welsh, reaching under his desk, setting her coffee mug on the counter. "Coffee?"
"Bore da Ianto, and thank you," she replied, taking the mug and taking an appreciative sniff. "Did you even go home yesterday, or did Jack make you stay and work?" she teased gently before taking a sip.
"Actually I had a lovely day in yesterday," Ianto replied, lifting his head to give her a quick smile. "Thank you for asking. And how was your trip home to visit your parents?"
"Good, good!" She gave him a smile as well. "Mum and Dad were happy to see us, me and Rhys. They started bothering us about giving them grandchildren."
Ianto gave a little laugh. "My mum started in at my brother's wedding reception," he told her. "She was so happy when Bethan got pregnant... until she had to babysit the triplets when my sister-in-law decided she was going back to work."
Gwen laughed, leaning against the counter and sipping her coffee. She and Ianto had made a bit of leeway since he and Jack had returned from visiting with the Doctor; she'd been rather put out over Ianto humiliating her over the phone as he had, but he'd apologized in his own quiet way and almost all had been forgiven.
Ianto smiled and leaned back over his work again. Gwen looked over his shoulder, turning her head to the side. "What's that, an electric bill?"
"Yup." He looked up at her again. "Just simple forgery, getting proof of address for Jack."
"Oh, is he doing another undercover job then?"
The Welshman's hand paused. "Not exactly," he said after a moment before going back to his work.
"Well then, for what?"
Ianto sighed. May as well bite the bullet. He straightened and tugged reflexively at his suit, smoothing out the wrinkles that had already formed. "We're going down to post notice today."
"Notice for what?" Gwen asked, confusion crossing her face.
"Notice for a civil partnership."
"Oh. Oh!" She gave an incredibly fake smile. "Well, congratulations, Ianto," she told him, patting his shoulder twice.
"Thank you."
Gwen leaned over and pressed the red button, opening the hidden door down to the Hub. She gave him another smile and looked like she wanted to say something, but thought better of it and disappeared down the hallway.
Ianto sighed. "Well, that could have gone a lot worse," he muttered to himself before going back to his work.
Toshiko couldn't get the silly grin off her face when she came down to the Hub. When Jack stepped out of his office she let out an adorable little squeal and wrapped her arms around his neck, hugging the life out of him. Jack had laughed and picked her up, spinning her around the Hub as both of them laughed and laughed.
Owen came down and scowled for a bit before going up and giving Jack a gentle punch on the shoulder, his way of saying congratulations. Jack, in response, wrapped his arms around Owen and gave him a hug, laughing as the doctor squirmed and pushed away from him.
Gwen sat quietly at her desk and gave Jack a tight-lipped smile.
"I've never seen Jack look so happy," Tosh sighed over lunch. Ianto and Jack had gone out for lunch, to go down to the Register Office, and they'd had take-away delivered, figuring that the two would be gone for quite a while.
"I have," Owen replied, playing with the wrapper of Toshiko's chopsticks. He snickered after a moment. "Of course, he didn't know I was watching."
"Owen!" Tosh smacked him with her napkin.
"I just hope that Jack isn't making a mistake," Gwen said, poking at her take-away. "I mean, I don't know if they're compatible, you know? Ianto is... well, Ianto."
"Yeah, the man who hid a Cyberwoman in the basement, helped capture and train the pterodactyl, shot me in the shoulder, and tried to save Toshiko from a bunch of cannibals at his own expense. He's completely boring," Owen replied sarcastically.
Gwen scowled a little at him. "That's not what I mean," she started defensively.
"Gwen," Toshiko pipped in, trying to cut off an argument between her two coworkers. "Just think about it. When's the last time you saw Jack's eyes light up the way they do since he came back?" She gave a gentle, understanding smile. "I think they really, truly make each other happy."
Ianto and Jack were holding hands when the heavy iron blast door rolled back. The registry office was within easy walking distance of the Hub, and they'd grabbed a bite to eat after doing the paperwork to give their notice and setting a date for the registry.
Both immortals blinked in shock when confetti floated down around them. Ianto looked over at Jack, who laughed and shook his head, little colored paper flakes floating out of of his hair. As one, they looked up and found Owen standing over the door, holding an empty waste bin.
Toshiko and Gwen grabbed their hands and pulled the two of them to the common area, where they'd moved a little table in front of the ratty couch. There was a little cake on the table, with "Congratulations" scrawled messily on the top, a bottle of cheap champagne chilling in a bucket next to it. "What's all this for?" Jack asked, brushing confetti off his shoulders.
"You're going to get married!" Tosh replied, hugging Ianto around the middle.
The Welshman laughed and patted her back. "You shouldn't have."
"Yes we should have," Gwen replied sincerely, reaching over to put her hand on Ianto's arm. "So, tell us all about it."
Both men shrugged and looked at each other. "Just filled out a lot of paperwork," Jack supplied. "Set a date."
"Oh?"
"The soonest we could get in was in a month," Ianto replied, squeezing Jack's hand gently.
"A month? That doesn't give you a lot of time to plan something, love," Gwen said with a smile.
"We don't really want a big to-do," Ianto said, smiling at Jack. "Just the paperwork."
Gwen and Tosh looked at each other, then back at Ianto. "Nonsense!" they both cried, grabbing at Ianto's arms and dragging him away, already talking about flower arrangements and wedding vows.
"Welcome to Hell, mate," Owen said, patting Jack's shoulder sympathetically.
Gwen was standing in the doorway to Jack's office. She didn't say anything, and Jack didn't acknowledge her, going through reports.
"Does he really make you happy?"
Jack paused for just a moment before nodding, still not looking up at her. "Deliriously, yes."
She crossed over to give the Captain a kiss on the cheek. "Good."
Jack looked up at her, and she shook a finger at him. "Don't you dare let it drift, Jack Harkness."
He gave her a grin. "I won't."
