"Ianto!" Jack's voice rang throughout the Hub. "Can you come up here for a bit?"
Three heads turned to look at Ianto Harkness-Jones, who was in the process of handing out the second afternoon round of coffee. He tried very hard not to sigh outwardly. "Just a moment," he called back in return, handing Gwen her mug and accepting her used dishes.
"I'll get Emi today," Tosh told him, giving Ianto a smile as he passed by on his way to the kitchen nook. "I'll let the translation program run for a bit."
Ianto smiled in return and nodded, fighting back the small feeling of disappointment. Little Emiko had started primary school a few months before, and the teachers were already discussing moving her up into the upper forms. She went to a school within walking distance of the Hub, and Ianto usually went to pick her up because Tosh was swamped with some sort of work or another. They'd walk back together, holding hands, and Emi would talk about her day and about new things she had learned and Ianto would smile and pretend, just for a bit, that she really was his.
"Ianto, you coming?"
"I'm on my way," Ianto called back, making a cup of coffee for Jack. "Anyone have any paperwork to go to Jack?"
Both girls held up files, which Ianto collected as he passed by. Owen smirked at him from the medical bay as he passed. "What, failing in your duties as a husband already, Tea Boy?" he teased.
The taunt didn't phase Ianto, though; It was all in good fun. "Hardly," he shot back. "In fact, I'm so good at them that they're in high demand."
He shut the door on Owen's moaning that he knew far too much about the Tea Boy's love life, looking at his husband. Jack had his head in his hands, and he looked up after the younger man had shut the door. "Ianto, I think I'm going crazy."
"It was bound to happen sometime," Ianto replied easily, handing over the mug.
Jack raised his eyebrows.
"What evidence do you have to support this idea?" Ianto asked, biting back the besides the obvious. Jack was, apparently, in no mood for teasing.
"Remember how I hit my head a few days ago?"
"It's not something I'll be forgetting soon, trust me," Ianto said, moving to lean against Jack's desk.
The team had been out tracking Weevils two nights ago, because Janet and the others in the Vaults had been acting oddly (and the last time they had acted like that, there'd been an underground Weevil Fight Club). They had split up, Jack and Gwen and Ianto and Tosh, while Owen stayed in the SUV and bitched the entire time about being left behind. Gwen and Jack had gotten ambushed, and while they'd been trying to subdue them with more peaceful means, two of them had grabbed Jack and had started bashing his head into the street.
Usually a Weevil just went for the neck (which, Jack argued, was thanks in part to the Weevil Fight Club. before, they'd been plenty content to stay to themselves in the sewers, coming up occasionally for a house cat or two), but this uncharacteristic, outwardly aggressive behavior was a sign that they were actually learning from their human neighbors.
The implication of that was downright terrifying.
It hadn't been until Weevil King Owen showed up that they'd relented, cowering away from him in that weird mixture of fright and honor, and he'd tended to their bleeding Captain as the others subdued and cuffed the Weevils. He'd been pale when Ianto had climbed in next to him in the SUV, but by the time they'd gotten back to the Hub, Jack had been just fine.
Ianto still wasn't sure if he'd died or not. Jack had dozed off on his shoulder during the ride, but he hadn't done the gasp-and-flail that signaled a death and a rebirth.
"Well, when I went to bed that night, I had a really weird dream," Jack explained, pulling Ianto out of his introspection. "Toshiko was a monkey, and Owen was this bitchy blonde and Gwen was a dragon and you had glasses and brown hair."
Ianto cocked his head to the side. "Well, Gwen may be happy with being a symbol of Wales, but I'm afraid you're not making any sense."
"None of you looked the same, but I knew it was you. Like how I knew the Doctor from the one I met the first time around to the one you met. There were differences in faces and other little things, but for the most part everything was the same. Except for Tosh. Owen was still an ass though."
"It's nice to see he's being consistent." Ianto crossed his arms. "But I still don't see the point you're making."
"I'm getting there," Jack said. "I didn't tell you about it because, I mean, it was just a dream. But ever since then I've had, I don't know, sort of psychic visions.
Pieces of that dream world breaking through in real life, like RetConned memories showing up when you see a trigger." He looked up at Ianto, and the younger man realized, a little guiltily, that there were circles under Jack's eyes. "Do you think I'm going crazy?"
"I think you hit your head and the trauma didn't heal properly," Ianto told him seriously. He moved over to carefully run his fingers through Jack's hair. "Maybe you have a concussion?" he offered, gently rubbing along his scalp.
"You might have a concussion, let me look at it."
Soft, cool fingers ran through his long --red, Jesus, the color of blood red -- hair, massaging his score scalp. He hissed and jerked away a little when they brushed over a sore spot, and he heard a soft chuckle. "Quite a bump. You and Goku must have been having a lot of fun."
"Stupid monkey," he grumbled, unaware from where the words had sprung up from.
Another soft chuckle, and he felt lips against the crown of his head. "Stay still for just a moment."
Warm tingling flowed across the scalp of his head, almost like the flit of nanogenes over damaged skin. He smiled softly, leaning back against the warm body behind him.
"Thank you, 'Kai." He cracked open his eyes and saw Ianto -- but it wasn't Ianto. The man had brown hair and deep green eyes hiding behind a pair of glasses, but he still had the same aura, the same smile.
"My pleasure," he murmured, leaning in to kiss him softly.
Owen had said he was physically fine, but might be having some sort of breakdown from overwork. He suggested they take a vacation, and within the hour the Doctor and Donna were there, TARDIS parked on top of the Invisible Lift.
The Doctor was giving Jack his own once-over while Donna and Ianto discussed what she was and was not allowed to do in his Archives. "It's possible you had some sort of lapsed memory loosened when you got injured," he said, leaning against the railing in the medical bay, arms crossed.
"I have two years of missing memory. Why wasn't it something from that?"
The Time Lord shrugged. "Don't know. How the brain works is still a mystery, even for me. Could be a dream state, could be an alternate universe personality. Could be, oh, I don't know, a past life."
"A past life?" Jack scoffed. "Doctor, honestly."
"It's just a possibility," he argued. "I'm not writing it off. Lots of religions have rebirth themes. Maybe they're not all wrong."
"Doctor. Am I going to have these flashbacks or whatever for the rest of my life?"
"Nah, you'll probably be fine in a few days," the Doctor said, waving a distracted hand. "A vacation probably wouldn't do you wrong though, you look a bit tired. Which could also be a factor." He grinned at him. "So you and Ianto pick a place, I'll take you there."
"You know what, Doctor? India sounds like a great idea right about now, actually."

Date: 2008-06-08 06:18 am (UTC)Btw, just a little nit-picking, but you know me. Your placing this in the timeline. Just two months after they got married? Wasn't Jack preparing to celebrate their 6 month anniversary when Toshiko asked Ianto to um...fill the cup? *confused*
Aside from that, hope to see them in India soon!

Date: 2008-06-08 04:46 pm (UTC)I love that Ianto walks Emi "home" to the hub after school. That's just adorable. She'd be about 5? He probably gets babbled up one side and down the other, which would be SO amusing to see. (I wonder if she's learned the Doctor!babble from Jack.)

Date: 2008-06-09 03:09 am (UTC)Don't know if I will, about Jack's missing years. That would be interesting.
And yes... he's fighting wanting to be her Dad and not wanting the heartbreak that's going to come with being her Dad, since she's going to die eventually. It's all a jumble in him. He adores her though, like he adores his nieces and nephews.

*giggle-snorts* Seriously, not only did you sneak this by me somehow, but you threw in Saiyuki for flavour!
Okay, on to the real comment. This was totally made of awesome. I've always had a soft spot for Hakkai and Gojyo and it's interesting how Jack and Ianto kinda fit that bill. As always, I love how you capture the characters voices in your stories. And horray for Emi! Double hooray for Ianto giving Donna the low-down on his Archives.
Great job as always! *gives cookies*
