"Oh! I know what it's like. It's like when you fancy someone and they don't even know you exist. That's what it's like. Come on!"
"You too, huh?"
-- The Doctor and Captain Jack Harkness, The Sound of Drums

Ianto sighed as he looked at the rows of herbs in the Healing Hall's cabinets. He ducked his head to compare the shape of one of the leaves in the jars to a sketch in the book he was holding. Herbalism was a bit of difficult -- a plant that could heal you could look just like a poisonous plant.

Why hadn't he been prepared? Maybe he should have brought Lisa along, maybe she would know which one was which. Girls just knew this sort of thing. But that just would have made it so blantly obvious that they (which 'they' he wasn't sure) probably would have written to it about her family and he'd be beheaded for such obvious disrespect to Crown and Country.

The image of her writhing underneath him flashed through his head, her dark skin stark against the white sheets. Oh, death would so be worth it.

"Having fun?"

Ianto jumped at the sudden voice and whirled around, book behind his back. He knew his entire stance was guilty, the unusually messy appearance and wild hair only adding to any suspicion. "Martha! Good morning."

"Indeed." She folded her arms across her chest and cocked a hip to one side. She'd make a great mother one day. "What are you doing?"

He thought for a moment, then showed her the book. "I'm doing some extra studying," he admitted. "I had the day off and thought I would use the time to further my studies."

"Really?" She twisted her mouth a little, nodding to herself. "That explains why you're looking at the herbal contraceptive shelves in the women's halls."

Ianto's eyes widened for a split second, but otherwise he didn't flinch. "It's very important to have a well-rounded field of knowledge, just in case I'm ever in a position to need it."

She tilted her head to the side. "You finally bedded Lisa," she concluded.

"Martha!"

She laughed at the look on his face and gave him a reassuring pat on the shoulder. "Calm down, love." She reached up into the cabinet and pulled out a small jar. "Here. It makes a very good tea."

Ianto looked down as she pressed it into his hand. "You're... not going to lecture me?"

"And what good would that do?" Martha asked. "You've already gone and done it." She closed the cabinet and slid the latch into place. "Make sure she comes to see me sometime soon, tomorrow would be best." He nodded in agreement and she smiled at him. "Now go on."

Ianto impulsively gave her a hug. "Thank you. So much."

She laughed and kissed his cheek fondly before pulling away. "Off with you!"

He grinned and headed off towards the door. His hand was on the knob when her voice reached his ears.

"Oh! And you really should tell John." Ianto turned on his heel and stared at her. She shrugged, putting the sketchbook back on the shelf. "Torchwood House protects their own. You'll have the full house support."

-----

Donna rubbed the bridge of her nose, taking a deep, calming breath. "You had to come forward when John is gone on business, didn't you?"

"It's not like we planned it this way," Lisa replied, reaching over to take Ianto's hand. Donna raised her eyebrows in suspicion, but it was true -- they'd stalled for about a week, wondering how they were going to approach the Doctor when he and Jack had suddenly had to go away to a little border kingdom practically overnight.

She sighed again, leaning against the Doctor's desk, paperwork piled high on the surface. "This is why I didn't take over the House," she muttered, mostly to herself, before looking at the couple. "So how do you want to handle this?"

The two of them looked at each other before. Lisa smiled at him and gave his hand a reassuring squeeze. "I love her, Donna," he said, smiling back at her, "and I'll do whatever I need to do so we can get married."

Lisa's smile broadened and Ianto brought their joined hands up to press his lips against the back of her hand.

"Oh God and Goddess, I get it," Donna sighed, pushing off the desk. "Ianto, you're common, so it'll be a bit more difficult; but you're from a good family, and you're a good man with Torchwood House's reputation behind you." She smiled at both of them. "I'll write the petition of marriage personally, and we'll send it to the Capitol."

"What about my mother's family?" Lisa asked.

"I'm not going to do all the work!" Donna replied with a laugh. "I'll write to that side too, but it'll probably be just a formality. They'll probably be falling over themselves for another Mage in your family, common birth or no."

Ianto looked over at Lisa curiously and she squeezed his hand again. "My mother's culture exalts those like you and my brother," she explained.

"So... this is truly going to happen?" Ianto asked. She smiled and nodded excitedly. He laughed and leaned in for a happy kiss.

"Oi, take it outside!" Donna said fondly, already digging through her brother's things for blank paper to write on. "You're so sweet, it's sickening!"

-----

Jack was in what Donna later referred to as classic Harkness form. He'd burst into Ianto's room where he'd been working on some Earth magic theory while John was in absentia. The younger man blotted the paper he'd been taking notes on when the door slammed against the wall.

"I'm gone two weeks, and you're getting married?" Jack gasped, grabbing the door frame and looking for all the world like that grip was the only thing keeping him from coming undone.

"No, not yet," Ianto replied. "We haven't heard from her father's side."

Lisa's mother's family, as Donna had predicted, had been ecstatic, sending Ianto a letter through Lisa that welcomed him to the family. Lisa had laughed and kissed him silly after he'd read it out loud to her.

"So?!" Jack entered the room and slammed the door behind him, the wooden slab rattling from the force the other man had put against it.

"Why are you so against royals?" Ianto asked, shoving his chair back and standing. "You're just as close to Ricky and Mickey as you are to Jake and me," he pointed out.

"That's different," Jack shot back.

"And, from what I heard, you never had such a problem with Lisa before." He moved to stand just out of Jack's reach. "So what is it now? Why do you suddenly hate someone based on their birth, on something that shouldn't matter so much?"

Jack watched him for a long moment. "You want to know why?" he finally asked.

"Yes."

"D'you really want to know why?" Jack repeated, stepping up into Ianto's personal space. For one insane moment, Ianto thought that maybe his friend was going to hit him, but the idea left his mind when Jack got closer, almost up nose-to-nose with Ianto.

"Yes!"

"Fine," Jack ground out.

Quick as a alchemy explosion, Jack grabbed the front of his shirt and pulled him close. Ianto started to shout in surprise but the noise was muffled when Jack pressed his mouth against Ianto's, tongue already pushing past his lips and tracing the line of his teeth.

Ianto flailed for a moment, one hand moving to Jack's shoulder. He was intending to push him away, but his arms just wouldn't cooperate. His other hand went up to tangle through Jack's long hair, mussing up the strands as he kissed him back, teeth clashing against each other in a sort of insane passionate fury.

Jack walked him back a few steps and he found himself pressed up hard against the wall, Jack's body hard and tight against his. Nimble fingers moved down Ianto's body, undoing the ties of their trousers, pushing the fabric out of the way. Jack touched his cock hesitantly at first. Ianto moaned and bucked his hips, and with that encouragement the other wrapped his fingers around his shaft, stroking him with perfectly calloused hands.

Ianto's own hand moved of its own accord off of Jack's shoulder and down into his pants, not even bothering to undo the line of buttons. The shaft was hot and heavy and hard against his hand, leaking from the tip. Jack moaned something unintelligible against Ianto's mouth, his hand speeding up on the younger man's shaft.

He quickly figured out that the more he touched Jack, the more Jack touched him, so he pulled a trick he knew he liked, trying to get both of them off in the quickest amount of time. He pressed the heel of his hand firmly under the head of Jack's shaft, trapping the cock between his hand and Jack's stomach. Fluid dripped down from the slit to slick Ianto's hand as he started rubbing quick, concise circles over the head and top part of the shaft.

Jack moaned low against Ianto's mouth and imitated the motion, fisting him occasionally and giving him a few hard, firm strokes before going back to circles.

Ianto picked up on Jack's ministrations too, and fisted him, stroking the other man from root to tip and back again. After a few pumps, Jack stiffened against him. Warm liquid squirted through his fingers and against his palm, a full-body shiver running through his entire body with each fresh spurt. The hand around him tightened and Jack dragged his calloused thumb over the slit. Ianto felt himself convulse as he orgasmed, thick white ropes of his seed splattering onto the stone floor at their feet.

Jack stayed pressed up against him, both of them panting as the sudden storm calmed and they began to have basic motor functions. After a long moment, Jack pulled away, easing Ianto's sticky hand out of the front of his pants. "Wow," he finally said with a laugh, looking down at the wet patch in his pants and at the mess on the floor.

Ianto looked at his hand, shocked and just a little bit horrified at how easily he'd succumbed, how easily he'd forgotten about Lisa. Was this the sort of man he was? Anyone with a pretty face and who could kiss was free game?

"You going to say something?" Jack prompted, taking Ianto's dirty hand into his own and licking the fingers clean. He gave a little bit of a grin, sucking teasingly on the tip of one digit.

The younger man jerked his hand away. "Get out."

"What?" The cockiness, the smugness in his voice just infuriated Ianto more.

He shoved his shoulder, leaving a wet hand print on Jack's shoulder. "Get. Out," he repeated.

"What, I pleasure you and you just kick me out?" Jack asked. "I'm not a whore."

"Piss off, Jack!" Ianto yelled, grabbing a cloth off the washstand and wiping himself clean before redressing himself. "You're -- " An insane thought flew through his mind and he grabbed onto it. "You thought you could just make me come and I'd fall all over myself to stay, is that it?" Jack opened his mouth, probably to refute it, but Ianto barged headlong, not giving him a chance to argue. "Well you can go jump off the bell tower for all I care."

"Ianto -- damn it, Jones -- " Jack reached out to grab Ianto's shoulders, and the younger man lashed out, his fist connecting with Jack's jaw. He heard it crack under the force of his blow and Ianto's eyes went wide, staring in shock as Jack gingerly touched his lip and bringing back fingertips covered in blood.

"Fine," Jack said, a trickle of blood slipping out from the corner of his mouth. He brought a hand up to cradle his jaw tenderly. "Fine. Go marry your fucking princess. You're just a fucking disappointment, common through and through," he spat before turning on his heel and storming out of the room.

Ianto sank to his knees, subconsciously aware of the now-cold pools of sticky white on the floor. His knuckles hurt and he ached inside, but he quietly bent over and cleaned the evidence of his betrayal off the floor.

How had things with Jack spun so wildly out of control so quickly?

Okay, so this whole argument was supposed to take place back in chapter eight (OMG have I already written 12 chapters of this?! I'm not even HALFWAY through what I have planned!) -- minus the snogging and handjobs against the wall. Then the Jack muse decided he'd push the argument back to much later in the story, when they have this big confrontation about his past.

Then he went, "Y'know what..."

Bastard.

Oh damn! Hot, angsty, happy, all in one chapter. That part with Jack (the argument part) was just exquisitely painful. Well done.

Don't worry. Jack's a drama queen, but he's not that stupid. Besides, even if he died, with his luck he'd get resurrected and have to deal with the Doctor -- and worse, with Donna!

Also, there's a typo: He heard it crack under the force of his blow and Ianto's went wide, staring... There should be an "eyes" in there.

Something else that I've been confused about from the start... is Jack a Mage, a Time Lord, or something else? Is he mundane?

Also, I had a humorous moment where I thought John was John Hart.

Does Jack have an actual reason against Lisa besides his Ianto-love *hunting for material for hatred* =D

I'm assuming Lisa is pregnant?

Whoa, that was unexpected.
I kind of suspected that Jack would kiss Ianto as his version of an explanation but going into full body clinch? No wonder Ianto was shocked (and more about his own willingness to go along than anything else). I just hope their friendship will somehow get back on track after this. I wonder if he's contemplating telling Lisa at all?
