"We once made a vow that we'd be with each other 'til we died."
-- Captain Jack Harkness, Small Worlds
Ianto's world seemed to go to shit overnight. Jack's disgust with Ianto was palpable during his classes. He only spoke to the younger man when it was absolutely necessary -- and even that was kept to a minimum. To make matters worse, it was as if all he'd learned had simply vanished.
The look of disappointment Jack gave him when he ballsed up made his chest hurt.
The rumors were, of course, off the mark but close enough to sting just a little. Most people thought that Jack had tried to break up the couple, and that Ianto had caught him trying to seduce Lisa. Jack, from what Ianto could tell, was doing nothing to dissuade these rumors, so he followed the older man's example and ignored the open stares and not-so quiet whispers.
Lisa, bless her, didn't press the subject when Ianto had told them they'd had an argument. She just stood by him, convinced he was right and honorable, a steady presence in his suddenly topsy-turvy world.
He so didn't deserve her.
-----
Ianto had been surprised when Owen, of all people, stopped acting like the self-proclaimed twat he was and ordered him home for some time away from Torchwood House. He'd told the Doctor that Ianto was displaying the early signs of magic burn-out, and recommended a complete removal from the House for a week, to help the young Mage recover faster.
Owen was a twat, but he cared more than he let on.
He'd gone home and been welcomed with open arms, of course. The healer had been right too, a little break and some time for introspection was just what Ianto had needed.
Oddly enough, home had changed. It didn't feel like home anymore; the steady schedule he'd known forever, the division of labor had shifted to accommodate his absence. The changes were minor, he knew, but they seemed like such a big deal.
It was like he was simply a visitor. Which he was now, in a way.
So it was only after a few days that he packed up his few things, kissed his family good-bye and ridden back to Torchwood House, back to his friends and to Lisa. He'd missed everyone, even Jack, and he saw now that he'd messed up -- but so had Jack, and he was willing to patch things up if Jack was.
The stables seemed a little fuller than they had when he left, and Ianto handed Myfanwy over to a stable boy. He thought it would do him a little good to sneak in through the kitchens, maybe get a bottle of wine and something to eat and surprise Lisa.
The kitchens, however, were a total disaster, with the staff rushing this way and that and preparing enough food to feed the entire House three times over.
"Don't want to be in here today, love," the head cook, Margaret, called out as she headed over towards Ianto. Her short-cut blonde hair was plastered to her forehead, and he stepped aside to let her grab a bread paddle hanging on the wall behind him.
"What's going on?" Ianto asked, ducking as she grabbed the paddle and swung it over his head.
"The King showed up."
"The King -- you mean King Harold?" Ianto's face split into a grin. "D'you think he's here to answer the petition?"
"No idea," Margaret replied, heading over to one of the bread ovens. Her round face glowed in firelight. "I hear that he and Mister Smith are having it out, however."
He hurried up towards the Doctor's office, passing hurrying servants and soldiers he'd never seen before. Standing outside the open doors of John's office was a brown-haired man, probably a few years older than himself. There was a scar down the left side of his face, and his hand was tight around the hilt of his sword.
Ianto held his own hands up to show he was unarmed. "I just wanted to see the Doctor -- John, please."
The guard fixed Ianto with a blank stare, but said nothing. Ianto opened his mouth to say some more, but was interrupted by the Doctor's cry of "For fuck's sake, Harry!"
"My decision stands," another voice replied, smoother. He could hear the smirk in the voice. "Lisa Hallet will not marry a commoner, Mage or no."
His entire body froze, his brain stopped functioning. He was pretty sure he forgot how to breathe for a few moments.
"Oh, come off it!" There was a slamming noise, like the Doctor had hit or kicked something. "She's not of any vital family importance, they love each other and he's a good kid!"
"She's needed elsewhere."
"I'm begging you, have a heart! Give them a chance, please."
There was a long pause before he heard, almost too low to hear, "Like you lost?"
There was a scuffling noise, and the guard hurried into the room. The movement of the other man broke the lock on Ianto and he moved to the doorway, staring at the scene. The guard from the hall had the Doctor on his knees, arms pinned behind his back as the third man -- King Harold -- looked down on him in amusement. He was tall and lean, with a long face and a decidedly creepy smile. "Attacking the King is high treason, John. I could kill you now if I wanted," he said, crossing his arms across his chest.
The Doctor barred his teeth and fought against the guard. Ianto could practically hear the growl.
"But if I really wanted to torture you, I'd just kill Jack."
"You will leave him alone!" the Doctor yelled, struggling against the guard even harder.
King Harold laughed. "All this over a commoner and a bastard. They must be very special to you." He turned to look at Ianto. "Hello there."
"Ianto," the Doctor gasped, following the king's gaze to Ianto in the doorway. "Ianto, I'm sorry. I'm so sorry."
King Harold started towards him, but Ianto remembered how his feet worked and he turned and fled. He knocked into a maid, sending her flying, but he didn't even bother calling out an apology in his rush to get to Lisa's room.
He burst into her room and staggered a little when he saw that she was packing. "No. Please, no."
"Oh, Goddess, Ianto." She dropped the clothing she was holding and hurried over to pull him into her arms. "I was so afraid that I wouldn't get to see you before I left."
"What happened?" Ianto pulled her away, looking down at her. "I heard him -- he said -- "
"Harold's such an arse!" Lisa burst out. "He said that the petition showed that I was mature enough for a husband, so he arrange something with a border kingdom."
He closed his eyes, wishing that his heart would just stop. It would be kinder. "You're -- you're getting married to someone else?"
"Oh God, I never thought this could happen," she swore, burying her face into his chest. "You have to believe me, Ianto."
"I do, love," Ianto replied, pressing his face into her hair. Her fingers twisted into his shirt as she started crying, her entire body trembling in his arms. He shed a few tears into her hair as well, but he knew she needed someone to stay strong for her right now. He could cry later.
Eventually, her tears subsided down into occasional hiccups. He sat her down on the bed and knelt at her feet, brushing her hair back from her face and running a thumb over her wet cheeks. "When are you leaving?"
"T-tomorrow morning," she managed, swallowing hard. Her fingers found the skirt of her dress and she twisted the fabric to occupy her hands.
He nodded and rocked back to his feet. He peered out the door and caught a passing servant, asking her for a pot for tea and something to eat. When the girl came back ten minutes later, Ianto was sitting on the bed with an arm around Lisa, rubbing her back and murmuring softly to her.
He moved to fix the tea himself, pouring the leaves into the boiling water before covering the pot. "We could run off," he suggested, his voice level. "Your mother's family approved."
"It would start a war," Lisa replied. "And you'd be killed."
"Worth it," Ianto said, straining the leaves out of the tea and pouring two cups.
"Not to me." She took the cup from him. "I want you safe."
He smiled softly, bringing his hand up to cup her cheek.
"Stay with me tonight?" she asked, looking up at him with red-rimmed eyes.
Ianto leaned in and kissed her softly. "Drink your tea, Lisa."
-----
She was packed, all her trunks and cases loaded onto the carriages. King Harold and the young bodyguard were in the first carriage, the monarch tapping the window impatiently. The entire House had turned out to tell her goodbye and Mickey and Ricky were in the second carriage in the caravan, waiting to escort their sister to her new life.
Ianto slipped the chain around Lisa's neck, trailing his fingers down to straighten the charm against her breast. He'd found a necklace with the most intricate dragon design and bought it for Lisa, since dragons were in her family's crest. He'd intended to give it to her for their wedding.
She gave him a soft sad smile, reaching up to touch the charm. "We'll be happy again," she said softly. "One day."
"Doesn't feel like it," Ianto admitted.
"I know." She framed his face in her hands. "But we have to be brave."
He shook his head. "I love you."
She leaned in and pressed her lips against his in a soft, far-too-brief kiss goodbye that mirror their first kiss.
It seemed so long ago.
"I love you too," she said as she pulled away. She met his eyes one last time before turning away and climbing up into the carriage.
The caravan jerked into motion once the door was closed behind her. Ianto stood in the middle of the lawn, watching as the convoy grew smaller and smaller before disappearing from sight.
He stared at the spot they had disappeared for a long time, dimly hearing everyone else shuffle off back into the House. He spun around when he felt a hand on his shoulder and found Jack standing behind him. He actually looked... sad.
"Happy now?" Ianto asked, letting his voice take on a hard edge. He was tired of being strong.
She was gone.
"No," Jack replied.
"Liar."
"I didn't want you hurt like this," Jack clarified.
Ianto pushed him away, growling when Jack did little more than rock back on his feet. "So what, you told me so? Is that it?"
The other man didn't say a word. Ianto pushed him again, harder this time so he stumbled a few steps. He wanted to fight Jack, to rehash everything, blame the man for everything he wanted slipping out of his reach.
He pushed him again and this time Jack tripped and fell onto his back on the ground. Ianto took the initiative and fell onto him, landing what he knew were undeserved blows onto the other man's chest and shoulders. Jack, however, just let Ianto take out his rage, making feeble attempts to dodge the worst of the blows.
The rage quickly subsided, however, and Jack cradled Ianto to him as the other man cried into his shoulder. "I'm so sorry, Ianto, I really am," he said, pressing his cheek against the top of Ianto's head.
Ianto just clutched at Jack's shirt and cried harder.

Date: 2008-09-07 02:46 am (UTC)Hm... the plot development in this chapter is good, but I think you could flesh it out a bit more, add more to the descriptions of reactions and the like. The events in this chapter are very emotional but I don't think your writing really shows it. You update this story practically every day and while I and your other readers enjoy, taking a bit more time to hike up the quality woulld be even more appreciated.

Let me know if/ when you revise this chapter (you could just come back to it later, I know what writing bugs are like), and I'll let you know what I think. Keep it up!

Date: 2008-11-13 08:08 pm (UTC)I've got to say they have both taken it rather well, considering. They are probably too mature and sensible for anything else (e.g. running away never mind any wars / ranting and screaming till the whole house nearly comes down etc).
Also that last scene reminded me so very much of Owen and Jack's encounter at Katie's funeral. Was that intentional? It certainly was perfect for this chapter.

Date: 2008-11-14 01:24 am (UTC)And yes, the Jack/Ianto scene at the end was supposed to be reminiscent of the Jack/Owen bit in Fragments.

Date: 2009-03-08 01:50 am (UTC)Well now isn't that just interesting.
The image of Ianto and Jack at the end was just beautiful. *sigh*

Date: 2009-03-08 08:30 am (UTC)And I did purposely mirror the Owen/Jack part from Fragments at that part.
