Okay everyone. NaNoWriMo starts in two days (OMG), and I thought I would give everyone a little bit of a preview for what to expect after Different Sort of Science wraps up.

I absolutely adore the spin-off books. I know that more than a few people in the fandom can leave them, but I think they're brill. About a month ago, I mentioned something about Unexpected Naked Jack showing up in one of the spin-off books. This resulted in [livejournal.com profile] paintedame leaving the following comment:

"On a side note. As the only person I've seen who reads the books, I would love to see a bit of interaction between Torchwood and some of the past characters of the Doctor Who books."

Well. When someone gives me such a lovely idea, how can I refuse?

Each chapter will be written/put out in order of the book they're written off of. Meaning that I'm going to be playing a lot with different characters, and they're going to be written in different points in Torchwood Three's timeline. Massive spoilers will be had.

This, of course, is slightly limited by the fact that I haven't read all of the books quite yet, and they're coming out with more and more every time I turn around. Think of it as an endless WIP, which will end either when I die or (Gods forbid) they cancel Doctor Who again.

Of course, I'll also have smatterings of other things for NaNo, including Slipping Through.

None of it's written yet -- as per NaNo guidelines -- but here are some of the lines I have already in my head.

-----

"Ianto, this is an old friend of mine, Das. Das, this is Ianto."
"Oh, is he your mate, Jack?"
"Am I his what?"

"Steady mate, I just need to check you over, make sure everything's ticking properly."
"Trust me, sir, the ticking isn't the problem."

"There's this planet out there -- somewhere, I dunno exactly, out there -- where it's completely illegal to tell fictional stories."
"How long did it take you to get arrested?"
"Little under two days."

"Martha, please, I'm begging you. No, I know you don't have any authority, just give me a name of someone who does. No, I'm not about to go invading Russia. Aliens land there, they can freeze to death for all I care. Cardiff's already too cold for me."

"Alien."
"How do you know for sure?"
"I only work for Torchwood. I know a non-human when I see one."

"I know her."
"What?"
"The model for this statue. I know her!"
"That's patently impossible, Jack, that statue was made over 2,000 years ago."

When this case was presented to Ms. Hartman, the Torchwood operatives already investigating the matter were allowed to continue their research on their own time as long as they practiced discretion.
Meaning she laughed you out of her office.

"It... sounds like the Great Pumpkin."
"Ooh, Charlie Brown fan. Good taste."

"They didn't believe me, but every word was true!"
"I'm sure they didn't. A year at Torchwood could inspire novels for a lifetime."

"Well... don't hedgehogs like salt?"
"How do you know these things?!"
"It's called an encyclopedia. Learn it, use it, love it."

"She trusted me with her very life. The Doctor... he didn't. Rose had faith in me, but only so much. She trusted me unconditionally, and she'd never even met me."

I assumed that Warren was having a mental breakdown from the grief of losing his cousin, and attempted to detain him. The more I attempted to restrain him, the more violent he got.

"Oh my God. It's her. It's really her. Rose, what happened to you?"

"The cat is annoying."
"Don't kick it, it fires lasers."
"...Seriously?"
"Out of its eyes."

"Any chance you could slip me your spare key, Ianto?"
"Sir, this is America. Who knows what might happen if they caught us."

"What about her?"
"Human, far as I know."
"No way."

Remember - I live in a state where sodomy was still technically illegal until the 90s and a hetero couple was prosecuted for having oral sex on the radio a mere 12 years ago - I can imagine many bad things.

I live in a state where sodomy -- in all forms -- was illegal until the Supreme Court invalidated ALL the sodomy laws in 2003. You beat us out by barely five years, though. Thank God for those Left Court Justices.

However, I didn't intend it to be like that. Ianto's just giving him a teasing deflection, and playing on Jack's accent.

Sounds like this will be a lot of fun! Good luck with Nano. I decided this year, I'm far too busy to make the attempt. Maybe next year.

So are you just doing lots of different projects for NaNo? and combining them all together? Just curious :)

I normally do short stories or a bunch of one shots -- or something like this. *laughs* Last year (Jesus, it's been a year!) it was DftN and Sonata.

I've read six of the books and have the one where Jack runs naked. It's a good read. Can't wait for the next set of TW books.

Good luck with NaNoWriMo. I never thought I could do that but with all the writing that I've been doing in the past month, I think I could now. *grin*

My betas have been teasing me for a month that I should have held off on Different Sort of Science. *laughs*

Only Human is my absolute fave, simply because of the diaries.

Please note, I didn't say put it off. I just added up the word count and came up with something over 50K. Which reminds me, I need to add them all up again on Saturday which means I might have to reread the whole thing again. Awww, shucks.

Oh, I loved the first one, and the third! I finally got around to finding the bit about unexpected Naked!Jack in "Only Human". So between that, and Naked!Ianto in "Pack Animals", I'm a very happy vegemite.
Good luck with your NaNo project! I'm planning a follow-up fic to my story "Another World". May we all have success over the next month, and minimal nervous breakdowns....

I couldn't wait. The books won't be released in Australia until December. I ordered them from a private seller in the UK (based in Cardiff, ironically), and paid about the same in total as I would have, had I waited. What can I say? I'm an impatient sod...

No...NaNo can't be Saturday! I'm not ready, I don't have an outline (DO NOT tell our ML this), I still have theater, and I haven't slept properly in four months, and all of you are going to write better stuff than me anyway. Please, Gracie, use your weather powers and postpone November for another month or so! I'll be ready to battle Five in a month...just, no...please not yet! October JUST started, I swear!! *bursts into frustrated, tired, artsy chick tears*

Oh! I didn't tell you...I'm an award winner now too! A short story of mine won a scribefarm (online writer forum) contest. I still think it means no one else entered, but, well, I'm not so sure I care!

I'm like that too. Trust me when I say your NaNo will go FINE and it will all be okay. How do I know this?

It is not possible for your November to match the one I had when I tried NaNo. (Details in brief are on my LJ.) It will all be okay.
