Okay everyone. NaNoWriMo starts in two days (OMG), and I thought I would give everyone a little bit of a preview for what to expect after Different Sort of Science wraps up.
I absolutely adore the spin-off books. I know that more than a few people in the fandom can leave them, but I think they're brill. About a month ago, I mentioned something about Unexpected Naked Jack showing up in one of the spin-off books. This resulted in
paintedame leaving the following comment:
"On a side note. As the only person I've seen who reads the books, I would love to see a bit of interaction between Torchwood and some of the past characters of the Doctor Who books."
Well. When someone gives me such a lovely idea, how can I refuse?
Each chapter will be written/put out in order of the book they're written off of. Meaning that I'm going to be playing a lot with different characters, and they're going to be written in different points in Torchwood Three's timeline. Massive spoilers will be had.
This, of course, is slightly limited by the fact that I haven't read all of the books quite yet, and they're coming out with more and more every time I turn around. Think of it as an endless WIP, which will end either when I die or (Gods forbid) they cancel Doctor Who again.
Of course, I'll also have smatterings of other things for NaNo, including Slipping Through.
None of it's written yet -- as per NaNo guidelines -- but here are some of the lines I have already in my head.
-----
"Ianto, this is an old friend of mine, Das. Das, this is Ianto."
"Oh, is he your mate, Jack?"
"Am I his what?"
"Steady mate, I just need to check you over, make sure everything's ticking properly."
"Trust me, sir, the ticking isn't the problem."
"There's this planet out there -- somewhere, I dunno exactly, out there -- where it's completely illegal to tell fictional stories."
"How long did it take you to get arrested?"
"Little under two days."
"Martha, please, I'm begging you. No, I know you don't have any authority, just give me a name of someone who does. No, I'm not about to go invading Russia. Aliens land there, they can freeze to death for all I care. Cardiff's already too cold for me."
"Alien."
"How do you know for sure?"
"I only work for Torchwood. I know a non-human when I see one."
"I know her."
"What?"
"The model for this statue. I know her!"
"That's patently impossible, Jack, that statue was made over 2,000 years ago."
When this case was presented to Ms. Hartman, the Torchwood operatives already investigating the matter were allowed to continue their research on their own time as long as they practiced discretion.
Meaning she laughed you out of her office.
"It... sounds like the Great Pumpkin."
"Ooh, Charlie Brown fan. Good taste."
"They didn't believe me, but every word was true!"
"I'm sure they didn't. A year at Torchwood could inspire novels for a lifetime."
"Well... don't hedgehogs like salt?"
"How do you know these things?!"
"It's called an encyclopedia. Learn it, use it, love it."
"She trusted me with her very life. The Doctor... he didn't. Rose had faith in me, but only so much. She trusted me unconditionally, and she'd never even met me."
I assumed that Warren was having a mental breakdown from the grief of losing his cousin, and attempted to detain him. The more I attempted to restrain him, the more violent he got.
"Oh my God. It's her. It's really her. Rose, what happened to you?"
"The cat is annoying."
"Don't kick it, it fires lasers."
"...Seriously?"
"Out of its eyes."
"Any chance you could slip me your spare key, Ianto?"
"Sir, this is America. Who knows what might happen if they caught us."
"What about her?"
"Human, far as I know."
"No way."
